U-Theatre‘s Classic Production The Colours 2.0 | Singing Beside the Drum Vessel – Part I
Featuring Singapore theatre artist Ang Gey Pin
Before the founding of U-Theatre, after completing her training with Grotowski in Italy, Liu Luo-Yu travelled to Singapore’s Practice Theatre. She brought with her a series of Grotowski-inspired physical training methods and collaborated with the company on a production titled The Silly Little Girl and the Funny Old Tree.
To this day, Gey Pin continues her journey along the path inspired by Grotowski’s work. Her encounter with Liu Jo-Yu during those years became an important initiation into theatre.
Singing Beside the Drum Vessel – Part I
This section is drawn from a parable by Zhuangzi. His open-hearted understanding of life and death invites us to move beyond habitual ways of thinking and conventional logic, allowing us to perceive life and death as part of a natural process of transformation. In doing so, it encourages us to reflect upon and face these realities with acceptance and equanimity.
Gey Pin’s singing and distinctive melodies are rooted in the tradition of Nanyin storytelling and singing.
The appearance of her character and voice within the performance breaks through established frames and boundaries, unfolding alongside the actors’ organic development on stage.
Her voice penetrates the powerful resonance of the drums, reaches deep into our hearts, and dances with us.
